Sometimes it can be difficult to visualize what the end result of a project will look like. Especially when we’re dealing with designs and concepts. So one of the things I wanted to do when launching Quiki.Site, was to provide samples or demos.
Show them.
Don’t tell them.
Mocking up sites in Photoshop, Illustrator, Figma, or Canva would be a great start. But pictures only tell a part of the story when it comes to websites. I want people to test drive the thing.
Spending money on a bunch of domains and hosting services for this just seemed silly to me.
The solution was to create a multisite.
As described in the video, a WordPress multisite allows for a network of websites to be created off a single top level domain. While each website (called subsite) in the network can look and act like a standalone website, it shares some resources with the other sites.
For example, each of the Quiki.Site demo sites are its own website. But looking at each website address, notice that they all share the https://quiki.site/ domain.
WordPress.com (not to be confused with WordPress.org) is itself a multisite network. Each blog or site created on the platform will have wordpress.com in their website address.
Aside from creating sample websites, what would be some other useful applications for a multisite network?
An organization with multiple locations comes to mind.
This might be a franchise operation whose franchisees offer products or services geared towards a certain local demographic. Or perhaps a large church organization with several satellite campuses, each with their own local leadership staff. Both would benefit from a multisite.
Additionally, a large school might have a single location, but multiple departments. Each department requiring its own website would be a great candidate for a multisite installation.
These are just a few possible use cases for a multisite.
Give it a try!
Maybe a multisite is the answer to a dilemma you’re trying to solve. If so, consider taking it for a spin on https://playground.wordpress.net/ .
