Project: Cali Cho Photography

One of the benefits of having personal or side projects is being able to maintain continuity of workflow when there are gaps in between client work.

Another is the opportunity to experiment, test, and become proficient in new technologies.

Such was the case with my daughter’s website, https://calichophotography.com

Delayed Gratification

I’d been putting off completing a site redesign for her. Although, truthfully, her site has never been fully completed.

Despite that fact, she’s still managed to successfully grow her business.

She’s a gifted photographer and smart business owner. But that’s no excuse to be left without a functioning website. On the contrary, it now becomes essential to get it right and ensure her website not only supports the valuable brand she’s established, but anchors it down.

A business’ website should have wider reach than any other marketing channel.

A New Home

The catalyst needed to get this project jump started was an expiring domain and plans to migrate the site/account over to another hosting company.

This used to be a tricky process that could take at least several hours, sometimes a day or so, just waiting for registrars to transfer domains and DNS to propagate once nameservers were changed.

Not to mention additional considerations if you’re dealing with custom MX configurations to swap email servers.

But in this case, tried and true systems, along with a more streamlined process made for a surprisingly smooth migration.

A New Engine

With the site behind a maintenance wall, this was the perfect opportunity to rebuild on the block-based Frost theme I’ve using for my sites as of late.

I’ve really started to get comfortable working my way around FSE themes and am enjoying the flexibility to customize sites as I envision them.

With WordPress investing its future into Gutenberg and blocks, Cali’s site should be relevant, current, and hardened moving forward.

A New Asset

There’s still a few finishing touches needing to get worked out on the new site. But I’m already pretty happy with how the site currently sits.

The real question remains to be seen. Does Cali believe she has a new brand asset? And is she happy with it?

I think so.
