The WordPress community’s highly anticipated State of the Word event will be livestreamed from San Francisco in a few hours. WordPress and Automattic co-founder, Matt Mullenweg will deliver the main address.
One of the highlights already known to drop will be the latest core release 6.9, although yet to be named. No doubt, the AI capabilities and MCP features will be a hot topic.
Updates to follow as more is revealed.
Update 1:
- Sadly, the YouTube feed dropped about 6mins into the broadcast. As far as I know, it never recovered.
- I tried the feeds on X and Twitch before giving up. Will have to see if there was a recording of it later.
- In the meantime, the official news release for Gene (6.9) can be found here https://wordpress.org/news/2025/12/gene/
Update 2: (12.3.25 @ 10am)
- Recording is posted and I’ve replaced the livestream link with that presentation.
- Overview of 6.9 ‘Gene’ is here: https://wordpress.org/download/releases/6.9/
- Official summary write-up is here: https://wordpress.org/news/2025/12/sotw-2025/
- Some links to great write-ups on the presentation

- WP Beginner must’ve been writing their article during the presentation… https://www.wpbeginner.com/news/whats-new-in-wordpress-6-9/
- and WPEngine made it a point to let everyone know that they were the 2nd largest contributor to 6.9 core – https://wpengine.com/blog/wp-engine-contributes-to-6-9-release/
I’m sure there will be a few more posts out there as people start digesting the presentation.
